Kent County Council has confirmed that construction work on its A249 Bearsted Road improvement scheme will begin on Monday 18th August 2025, following the award of the 拢10.8m contract to Breheny Civil Engineering.
The 15-month project is designed to ease congestion and improve traffic flow on one of Maidstone鈥檚 busiest roads.
The improvements will include:
- upgrading and signalising the A249 Bearsted Road and New Cut Road roundabouts
- expanding the link road between the A249 Bearsted Road and New Cut Road to a four-lane dual carriageway
- installing new retaining walls
- creating a new access road to Newnham Court Shopping Village
- adding a shared path and cycleway to improve connectivity between Vinters Park and Grove Green.
Peter Osborne, cabinet member for highways and transport at Kent County Council, said: 鈥淭his is a significant investment in Maidstone鈥檚 transport infrastructure that will bring long-term benefits to residents, businesses and commuters. By easing congestion and improving access for all road users, we鈥檙e helping to future-proof the area for continued growth and building a smarter, more resilient road network.鈥
