The Department for Education has signed terms with Willmott Dixon Construction for the demolition of buildings at Durham Academy and reconstruction of facilities.

Two of the secondary school鈥檚 main buildings, dating from the 1960s, will be demolished: a 19,000 sq ft two-storey block and a 40,000 sq ft block that ranges from one to three storeys.

A new three-storey building with capacity for 500 pupils is to be built in place, which is the same capacity as it was before.

The proposed development is expected to take approximately 25 months to complete, with site work starting this month and demolition of the first building beginning in September.
