II.2.4) Description of the procurement
Ramsclough Farm Retaining Wall supports the B6236 Haslingden Old Road. A landslip at this location has caused the retaining wall and 1 lane of the carriageway to collapse, over a length of approximately 30 meters. Haslingden Old Road was subsequently closed for safety.
The existing retaining wall is a mass concrete retaining wall. Geotechnical investigations have revealed that the ground conditions are extremely poor. It would therefore not be feasible to design a gravity retaining wall to modern design standards founded at the same level of the existing retaining wall.
A scheme has been developed to replace the collapsed wall with a new retaining structure founded in bedrock. The alignment of the wall shall be unaltered. The carriageway shall be rebuilt and will include improvements to the highway drainage to address historic highway flooding issues at this location. Finally, the works will include a suitable vehicle restraint system.
